He holds the position of President of Confcommercio Cosenza and Confcommercio Calabria, and is a member of the Board and National Councilor of Confcommercio – Imprese per l’Italia. Klaus Algieri has represented Italy at the European Parliament in Brussels on three occasions (2016, 2018, and 2023) and led the Cosenza Chamber of Commerce in joining the UN Global Compact in 2020, one of the few Italian public organizations included in the United Nations “Pact.” He is a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and an Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, appointed by the President of the Council of Ministers.

</details>

President, in your discussion with the students of Green Social Impact Manager, you stated that sustainability starts from local territories: how important is it today that even small contexts and local businesses are recognized as real protagonists of the transition and not simply as recipients of top-down policies?

We must start from our own land, because sustainability cannot begin with laws imposed from above, by governments and multinationals. Because the real economy is made up of consumers and businesses, but 90% of European businesses are micro-enterprises and small businesses. If it did not start from local territories, it would be nothing more than marketing. But sustainability is a genuine necessity, and those who have the duty to implement it must be able to direct it, must be able to govern it. That is why sustainability is made up of three factors: environmental, social, and governance. Therefore, if we govern it, it means we accept it, whereas if it is imposed on us, it becomes a business and that is completely wrong.

You have repeatedly referenced, both with the students of Green SIM and in your speech at the European Parliament, the lesson of Adriano Olivetti. How relevant is it today to have an idea of business that does not separate economic growth from community well-being?

Adriano Olivetti was already the 2030 Agenda. He embodied the concept of modern sustainability. Even today we are still pursuing what they did not allow Adriano Olivetti to do.

Green Social Impact Manager is a free program developed to train young people capable of understanding, among other things, sustainability, stakeholder engagement, and territorial development: how useful can a professional figure who knows how to support businesses in these processes be, even for SMEs?

Today, sustainability is implemented by SMEs in what I would call an unconscious manner: SMEs practice sustainability, but they are not aware of it. SMEs try to adapt to top-down regulations, but they need consultants who can explain to them what the regulatory obligations imposed by governments are and how to comply with them.

Interview with Klaus Algieri President, in your discussion with the students of Green Social Impact Manager, you stated that sustainability starts from local territories: how important is it today that even small contexts and local businesses are recognized as real protagonists of the transition and not simply as recipients of top-down policies?
