With this spirit, we have renewed two initiatives in Filogaso that have involved the entire community over the years: on 25 September 2026, World Children’s Day, and on 1 October 2026, a community lunch for the International Day of Older Persons. Two events united by the desire to put at the centre the people upon whom a community is built: older people, guardians of the past and collective memory, and children and young people, the expression of its future.

The 25 September event, dedicated by Pope Francis to children in 2024 and already celebrated by the Augurusa Foundation that same year, involved pupils from the nursery, primary and lower secondary schools of the Sant’Onofrio School Institute. The programme was tailored to different age groups, with the shared aim of turning values such as peace, respect, inclusion and solidarity into experiences of play and reflection.

For the youngest children, the activities revolved around the “House of Peace”, inspired by the drawing created by little Antonio Emanuele, which the children filled with colourful images depicting small acts of peace. Primary school pupils took part in the project “Filogaso: The Village of Peace”, a group activity in which they imagined and built the rules and principles necessary for a community based on respect, listening and cooperation. These reflections then gave rise to a “Peace Pact”, a series of small actions that the children committed to putting into practice in their everyday lives. For lower secondary school students, the activities instead offered opportunities for reflection and discussion through storytelling and themed quizzes.

The support of institutions, the Church community and local organisations has also been invaluable, and we would like to express our gratitude to: the Bishop of Mileto-Nicotera-Tropea, H.E. Mons. Attilio Nostro; the Mayor of Filogaso, Massimo Trimmeliti, and the Municipal Administration; the School Principal, Raffaele Vitale; and Don Giancarlo of the Parish of Sant’Agata in Filogaso. They were joined by the dairy company Monardo, which donated chocolates of its own production to the children, and local associations I Sogni di Matilde, Terra Amica and Udire, together with the Filogaso Scout Group, all of whom contributed by making their volunteers available.

Just a few days later, on Thursday 1 October, on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, we invited the older residents of Filogaso to take part in a day dedicated to intergenerational dialogue, through the involvement of students from the lower secondary school in Filogaso. Through group activities, interviews and a dedicated space for storytelling, older people shared their experiences and moments from their lives with younger generations, offering the children an invaluable heritage of memories. The day then continued with a community lunch, prepared with the collaboration of volunteers from the Filogaso community and with the valuable contribution of the Calippo, Monardo and Cantine Benvenuto, who enriched the initiative with their local products.

An event that saw the active participation of the entire community. We thank all the organisations and all the volunteers who offered their support in the preparation and organisation of the event: Francesca Testa and her mother Rosalia, Franco Mari, the Parish of Sant’Agata, the Filogaso Confraternity, Maria Condello of the Udire social cooperative, Rocco Barbuto of Pro Loco, Domenico, Caterina and Rosaura of the Terra Amica association, the I Sogni di Matilde association, the Filogaso Scout Group and the Municipal Civil Protection Service.

“Every generation carries a piece of history with it, and that story deserves to be listened to, preserved and passed on” – declared President Francesco Augurusa – “A happy, united community, capable of sharing moments like today’s, recalls the dream that my brother Antonio had imagined through the House of Peace: a place where people could meet, feel welcomed and build bonds of solidarity and closeness together.”

Through these initiatives, we renew our commitment to promoting opportunities for growth, social interaction and participation in Filogaso. We believe in a model of community that is born from the bottom up, from the care of relationships, from listening to others, from respect and solidarity. We believe that peace, even before being an objective to pursue in the world, is built within the communities that each of us inhabits every day.

From World Children’s Day to the International Day of Older Persons, two initiatives celebrate participation, dialogue between generations and a culture of peace that grows from within communities.
