Virtus Lab: Training as a Path to the Dignity of Work
An Alliance Against the Skills Mismatch
October 3, 2026 – Renato Loiero
“The Italian labor market is experiencing a double paradox. On one hand, companies cannot find qualified personnel; on the other, many young people, especially in Southern Italy, remain unemployed or leave without prospects. Virtus Lab, the social innovation model developed by the Antonio Emanuele Augurusa Foundation with the support of the UCID Youth Movement, was created to bridge this divide.
From its headquarters in Filogaso, in the province of Vibo Valentia, the project has been building entirely free certified training paths for ten years, for both companies and students. It does so in line with Goals 8 and 10 of the UN 2030 Agenda: decent work and reduced inequalities.
Training at the Center, Together with the Dioceses
The heart of the model is training. With the ‘Talent Custom’ approach, the paths are designed based on the needs of the requesting company. Learning is done by doing, using company equipment, with company technicians in the classroom and Foundation coaches focusing on soft skills. Alongside the trade, the person is formed.
The role of dioceses and parishes is decisive. Within the project’s Steering Committee, they collaborate with schools, universities, employment centers, and third-sector entities to identify candidates. The ecclesial network, rooted in the local areas, reaches young people that traditional channels do not intercept. The same network supports students with free accommodation, tutoring, and guidance in the destination community.” …
